Local man injured in Interstate 81 accident

From Staff Reports

KINGSPORT -- An Elizabethton man was injured in a traffic accident on Interstate 81 at Exit 56 that left three dead and another injured Thursday at approximately 12 p.m.
Joseph Jackson, 40, of Elizabethton, was driving a tractor-trailer when the driver of a Plymouth Voyager van lost control at the exit, causing it to re-enter the Interstate and be struck in the side by the tractor-trailer.
Joyce W. Poff, 47, driver of the van, and her son, Joey Mendez, 17, both of Shawsville, Va., were killed along with Brad Dickerson, 18, of Elliston, Va. All three were ejected from the van when it was struck, according to police.
Injured was Poff's other son, Travis Poff, 21, who was being held overnight at Holston Valley Medical Center for treatment of nonfatal injuries. None of the occupants of the van were wearing a seat belt, police said.
Slick roads were blamed as the cause of the accident, and police stated that, while investigation into the accident is continuing, no charges have been placed.
Jackson and Travis Poff were taken to Holston Valley Medical Center for treatment and were later released.
