State Rep. Ralph Cole announced Friday that Gov. Don Sundquist will donate $5,000 to the Elizabethton/Carter County Veterans War Memorial Park to be constructed at the corner of Pine Street and Elk Avenue.
Rep. Cole said he worked with Gov. Sundquist, and Commissioner of Finance Warren Neel to secure the contribution.
Grant papers are being sent to Elizabethton so that city officials can sign them. Rep. Cole said he will be delivering a $5,000 check to Mayor Sam Laporte sometime during the next seven to 10 days.
"We appreciate the donation from the governor and Rep. Cole. Rep. Cole is a member of our committee and we appreciate him getting in there, rolling up his sleeves, and helping us out. I think that it is wonderful, we really appreciate it," said Deacon Bowers, chairman of the Veterans War Memorial committee.
State Sen. Rusty Crowe, also a member of the Veterans War Memorial Committee, said he, too, appreciates the donation from Rep. Cole and Gov. Sundquist.
"We are at a point in time where donations are needed for the project. I invite members of the community, veterans and their families who desire to memorialize a friend or loved one to make a donation," Sen. Crowe added.
"Veterans War Memorial Park is dedicated to those Carter Countians who made the supreme sacrifice and gave their lives in defense of our country," Rep. Cole said.
Names of 186 Carter Countians killed in combat in all wars, including the latest casualty, Jefferson Donald Davis of Watauga, will be inscribed in granite stones of the memorial.
"This memorial will serve to remind all, including future generations of Carter Countians, of those courageous individuals who gave their lives for all of our freedom," Cole said. "It is a tribute well deserved."
The Veterans War Memorial committee is planning to officially kick-off the fundraising drive on Jan. 26. Congressman Bill Jenkins and representatives from various veterans organizations have been invited to participate.
Tax-deductible donations should be sent to the City of Elizabethton Veterans War Memorial Fund, Office of Finance Director, Elizabethton City Hall, 136 S. Sycamore St., Elizabethton, TN 37643.
