Bids were opened in February for the refurbishing of the Broad Street Bridge, on which thousands of motorists cross each day as they enter and leave Elizabethton.
Refurbishing of the bridge is expected to begin this spring, however, one lane of the bridge is expected to remain open at all times.
The Jamison Construction Company of McEwen submitted the apparent low bid of $861,767.65 for restoration work of the concrete bridge that spans the Doe River, according to a TDOT Project Report.
The arches under the bridge will be restored as well as the concrete urn railing and lamp posts.
Also, the city announced plans in December to rebuild the Doe River Mill Race, which runs under the bridge, while the bride restoration work is being done. The city also plans to build a walkway under the bridge connecting Race Street to city-owned property located on Riverside Drive.
The Broad Street Bridge as well as the Elk Avenue Bridge were built in the 1920s by the Luten Bridge Company, one of the premier bridge design and construction companies of the last century.
