Customers at Kathy's Consignments have been in the mood for spring, according to Kathy A. Bowers, the store's owner.
"Everybody's done with winter," Bowers said. "They're done with the cold weather. They want spring shoes. They want spring tops. They don't even want to look at it if it's not spring. They don't want anything to do with winter."
Kathy's Consignments features a variety of name-brand clothing. "I have name-brand ladies jeans, tops, dresses, pocketbooks, shoes, and children's clothing," said Bowers. "Later on, I'll be getting in some men's clothes.
"I have Abercrombie & Fitch, Tommy Hilfiger, American Eagle, Gap, and Old Navy, most of the top brands."
The shop's atmosphere, Bowers says, "is very pleasant. The only thing I know is when I come down here, I really feel at peace, at rest. In a lot of ways, it's like I've been here for a long time. It's not like home, but to me, it's almost like home." She says her family helped decorate and paint the new shop.
Bowers enjoys going to the shop each day. "I don't dread it," she said. "In fact, I look forward to it.
"When I go to bed of a night, and after I pray, and I lay there for a few minutes before I fall asleep, I think, 'Well, what is the Lord going to do tomorrow? Who's going to cross the path?'"
Bowers also enjoys conversing with people. "Sometimes, I'm down, but God always has somebody to encourage me," she said. "If you come here and you're kind of down or having a rough day, it's my prayer that I can minister to you and lift you up. We're soldiers, so when we kind of get down or get a little wounded, we've got to have some of that Holy Ghost salve."
Bowers says that teenagers help her to stay up-to-date on the current trends. "They say, 'Have you heard about this?' That's how I find out what's the latest," she said.
Merchandise has been arriving daily at the shop, according to Bowers. 'Every day since I've been here, there's been different stuff put in," Bowers said. "Every day is different.
"I love people," Bowers said. "The most important thing is that I will be a help. That's the whole idea. Back when my children were small, we didn't have the opportunity to be able to get the name-brand clothing, or the nicer clothes, at a used place. But I thank God now that we can. Today, all of us, no matter where we're at in life, I think it gives us all a chance to wear the best if we want to wear the best. I want to be able to help all people, but most of all, I want to be able to help those who really need the help. That's my main goal.
"God has already blessed me. I have everything that I need, and that's the truth. I believe that if you live today, walking in Jesus Christ in the faith, that He said, 'I will supply your needs.' It's been my desire to be able to have a shop to help people. If I can be a blessing to someone else, then God is going to bless me back. The Word of God says that what we measure out is what will come back, so we don't want to put out bad, because if we put out bad, then we get bad."
Bowers, who also owns KAB Construction and Masonry, said that Kathy's Consignments had a successful grand opening on Feb. 13. "We had quite a few people," she said. "It was off and on, but it was pretty well steady. We had a wonderful day. Thank God, it was so peaceful."
Kathy's Consignments is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. For more information, call 542-6647.
