Applied Technology can be common sense approach to learningBy Bob RobinsonStar Staff brobinson@starhq.com The vocational education program at Elizabethton High School (EHS) is now called Applied Technology. It is a sign of the changing landscape of education, according to Adeline Hyder, vocational director at EHS. Competency profiles are kept on every student. Teachers are held accountable for what is taught in the program of study. "Our goal is for 75 percent of the students to attain 75 percent of the competencies," Ms. Hyder said. Applied Technology encompasses: * Cosmetology -- Principles of Cosmetology, Design Principles of Cosmetology, and Chemistry of Cosmetology; * Family and Consumer Science -- Family and Consumer Science 1, Nutrition and Foods, Housing and Interiors, Family and Parenting, and Child Development; * Health Occupations -- Medical Therapeutics, Nursing Education, Rehabilitative Therapy, and Clinical Internship; * Vocational Agriculture -- Fundamentals of Agriculture, Greenhouse Management, Horse Science, Forestry, Interior-Exterior Landscaping, Turfgrass Management, and Floral Design; * Automotive -- Transportation Care; * Business -- Document Creation Design, Electronic Web Page Design, Keyboarding, Desktop Publishing, Spreadsheet Applications and Database Design; and, * Other Courses -- Math for Technology, Marketing/Co-op, Career Management Success, and Legal and Protective Services I, II and III.
